How to fold a jumper (so it actually stays folded!)

Right, you've got your lovely new jumper - now how do you keep it looking good? Knowing how to fold a jumper properly makes all the difference, especially with knits that can stretch out of shape if you're not careful. Here's the right way to do it:

1. Lay it flat, front-side down - smooth out any wrinkles with your hands.
2. Fold one sleeve across - bring it diagonally toward the opposite hem, so the cuff sits near the bottom edge.
3. Repeat with the other sleeve - you should now have a neat rectangle.
4. Fold in half from bottom to top - or in thirds if it's a chunky knit.
5. Store flat in a drawer - never hang knitted jumpers, as they'll stretch and lose their shape over time.

Sherpa fleeces and sweatshirts are more forgiving and you can get away with hanging them on wide-shouldered hangers - but knits should always be folded and stored flat. Your jumpers will thank you.

Keeping your jumpers looking fresh all season

Want your jumpers to last beyond this winter? Here's how to keep them in top condition:

• Wash less, air more - Unless your jumper's actually dirty, there’s no need to wash it after every wear. Give it a little hang to air out instead - you'll preserve the fibres and save yourself a ton of laundry.

• Use a gentle detergent - Go for something designed for wool or delicates. Harsh detergents can fade colours and wear out the fabric faster than you can ask “when is Christmas Jumper Day?”

• Wash inside out on a cool, gentle cycle - This protects the outer surface and helps prevent pilling. Always check the care label first though!

• Reshape while damp - After washing, gently pull your jumper back into shape and lay it flat to dry on a towel. Never tumble dry knits - the heat can shrink or distort them.

• De-pill regularly - Those little bobbles are annoying but totally normal. Use a fabric shaver or de-pilling comb to keep your jumpers looking sharp. Do this gently to avoid damaging the fabric.

• Store properly in the off-season - Clean your jumpers before storing them away, fold them neatly (remember how to fold a jumper from earlier?), and pop them in breathable storage bags or boxes. Chuck in some cedar balls or lavender sachets to keep moths at bay.
