Why are people suddenly wearing fleeces again? A guide to the fleece comeback

You’ve probably clocked it already - fleeces are back. And not the boxy, zip-up numbers your dad lived in on camping holidays back in the day, we're talking sherpa and micro fleece pieces that actually earn their place in your everyday wardrobe.

These are the fleeces you grab without thinking; the ones that live on the back of a chair, get thrown on for blustery walks, shifts in the office, and those “I’ll just nip out” errands that somehow turn into three hours.

So, are fleece jackets still in style? Very much so - and they’re not a passing phase. Modern fleeces are lighter, warmer, and better shaped, built for layering and that laid-back gorpcore-style everyone’s into right now, which is why they’ve stuck around.

Let’s take a closer look at why fleeces are so popular again, the types of fleeces available, and how to style one in 2026!

What is a fleece good for?

Wondering what all the fuss about fleeces is? Simply put, a fleece is a soft, lightweight fabric that keeps you warm without weighing you down. Unlike chunky winter coats, they trap heat while staying breathable and comfortable.

A fleece is made for those dog walks that end up longer than planned, school runs in sideways drizzle, cold car parks, windy viewpoints, and pub gardens that looked like a good idea ten minutes ago.

Instead of piling on weight, a fleece works by holding warm air close to your body while letting heat escape when you’re on the move. That’s why it feels cosy when you stop and comfortable when you don’t - no overheating, no stiffness, no bulk.

Somewhere along the line, fleeces stopped being outdoor gear and became the most-worn layer in everyone’s wardrobe.

What is a micro fleece?

So… what is a micro fleece?  It's exactly what it sounds like - the lighter, thinner cousin of your classic fleece. Same cosy feel, just without the bulk. The fibres are finer and more tightly woven, which means you get warmth that feels softer, lighter and much easier to wear day to day.

This is the fleece you reach for when you’re not braving a blizzard, but still want something comfy. It’s softer against the skin, packs down small, and easier to layer under jackets or coats. If chunky sherpa is your full-fat winter warmer, micro fleece is the easy, everyday option.

Is micro fleece warm?

Yes - just not in the same way a chunky sherpa fleece is. Micro fleece is brilliant for mild to cool weather, spring mornings, autumn afternoons, or as an extra layer when you're indoors, and the heating's on the blink. It's not built for freezing conditions, but for everyday use? It's spot-on.

The key is knowing when to reach for it. Micro fleece works best when temperatures are hovering around 5-15°C, or when you're layering it under a waterproof jacket or windbreaker. It keeps you comfortable without overheating, which is why it’s such a favourite for commutes, dog walks, and everyday pottering about.

What is a sherpa fleece?

At the other end of the fleece family, you’ve got sherpa fleece - a fluffy, textured fleece that feels like wearing a cloud. Sherpa is a super-soft fleece designed to copy the look and feel of sheepskin, with a thick, woolly pile on one or both sides that locks in heat and feels ridiculously soft.

Sherpa fleece is the layer you grab when it’s properly cold out and you want instant comfort. It’s thicker and softer than microfleece, which is why it’s a firm favourite for slow winter walks, chilly days out, or those evenings when all you want is something warm and reassuring to sink into.

What is sherpa fleece made from?

Sherpa fleece is usually made from soft polyester fibres that are brushed and looped to create a thick, fluffy pile texture. The result is a fabric that's incredibly soft, insulating, and surprisingly lightweight for how warm it feels. The fluffy surface creates more air pockets than standard fleece, which means it holds onto heat even better.

Unlike natural sheepskin, sherpa fleece is fully synthetic - making it easier to care for, quicker to dry, and more affordable. You get that snug, woolly feel without any faff, which is exactly why sherpa fleece has quietly become a cold-weather favourite

How to wear a fleece in 2026

Fleece jacket trends in 2026 are all about keeping it modern, practical, and comfortable. Stick to sleek cuts in neutral or earthy tones – think the Zermatt Sherpa Fleece in forest green, the Cameron Sherpa Fleece in cloud, the Joanna micro fleece in pebble, or a warm Firan sherpa fleece jacket. Avoid anything too baggy; a well-fitted fleece should sit close to the body without being restrictive.

For everyday wear, layer a micro fleece jacket, like our Pearson, under the Beverly 3-in-1 waterproof on cooler days, or throw it on solo with jeans and trainers for casual comfort. Heading outdoors? Grab a sherpa fleece jacket like the Sara or the Flaxley, pair it with walking trousers, boots, and a beanie - perfect for countryside strolls, weekend camping, or winter walks along the moors.

Travelling? Fleeces are brilliant for planes, trains, and road trips. They're warm, lightweight, and easy to pack. Roll one up in your bag, and you've got instant comfort when the temperature drops.

And yes - you can absolutely wear a fleece to work. A clean, well-fitted micro fleece, like our Revive series, layered over a t-shirt or under a light jacket, works brilliantly for offices that lean smart-casual. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and let the fleece do the talking - there’s no need to overthink it.

Which fleece is right for you?

Choosing the right fleece really comes down to how you'll use it. Micro fleece is made for everyday life - easy layers, dog walks and quick dashes out. Sherpa fleece is all about serious warmth and that sink-into-it softness.

At TOG24, you’ll find fleeces for men, women and kids, covering everything from lightweight throw-ons, like our fantastic Aztec, to chunky winter layers - and even a collab with Aaardman’s famous Shaun the Sheep.
